tamatebaco is a black box. But that black takes more than a word to explain. Today, let me tell you about this black, and the single line of silver that runs through it.
It is not painted black

First, this is not paint. The metal surface itself is finished black, so there is no layer to peel away like a coating. It is a deep black that seems to drink the light.
There are many black boxes in the world. But most are color laid on a surface. That the metal itself is black shows, in the hand, as a difference in density.
The metal shine, left only on the edges
This may be the single thing to look at longest. After the whole box is blackened, only the edges are cut once more, bringing back a thread of the metal's own shine.
Try turning it slowly under a light. The black faces stay quiet, while only the line of light on the edges moves, one at a time. Because not everything shines, that one line works. There is no showiness. The longer you look, the more you notice how fine the line is.
One line along the seam

Where the lid meets the body runs a fine line, bright as a mirror. Black holds the quiet, and silver traces its outline.
Run a finger along the edge of the lid. There is not a single place that catches. Every corner has been cut back, so nothing digs into your palm. This lack of catching exists only because we spent the extra work of cutting the corners away.
With use, it becomes your box

Metal settles into the hand with use. Where your fingers rest, it slowly changes its face. Small marks, and the traces of a hand, become the record of the box becoming yours.
This is not a box that is most beautiful the day you buy it. The new face lasts only once, and the face beyond it is something you raise. Because each is engraved with its number, the one in your hands remains as a record that exists nowhere else. The longer you use it, the more the matter of price fades from mind.
Why this black is different
- A deep black of the metal itself, not a coating
- The metal shine kept only on the edges, moving as you turn it
- A single mirror-bright line along the seam
- A full roundness where no finger ever catches
- A record of wear that grows into yours alone
This black and this line come alive best under real light. Please see the one you would bring home.
