A palm-sized cube cut from a solid block of aluminum, with the traditional seven-treasure (shippō) motif on its face. A piece from the tamate era, made by the workshop.

Stand a seal in it, or give a small thing a place to rest. Cut one at a time — one of a kind.

Where it's made

A small factory in Sumida, Tokyo. This is where tamatebaco is made. Most days, it makes precision machine parts and measuring tools. For decades it has cut and measured metal, working to fine tolerances. tamatebaco comes from the same factory, the same machine tools.

It isn't poured into a mould. Each one is cut from a solid block of metal. It takes time and effort, and much of the block ends up as shavings. Still, there is a form and a feel that only this way of making can give.

After machining, each piece is checked for size and finish, one by one. Just as with machine parts: make it exactly, and check it properly. That is how we make things.
